AUST – Hendry advise that additional provisions have been added into the Building Code of Australia (BCA) regarding Braille and Tactile signage for buildings which are required to be accessible (disability access) which must be assessed during a disability access audit. In addition to identifying sanitary facilities, spaces with hearing augmentation systems and pedestrian entrances the BCA now requires exits to be identified with Braille and Tactile signage.

The requirement is that each door which is required to be provided with an exit sign under BCA-E4.5 must also be identified with Braille and Tactile signage and stating:

  1. “Exit”
  2. “Level” followed by the floor level number.

The design and installation of Braille and Tactile signage must comply with BCA-Specification D3.6
