AUST – Essential Property Services advises that during fire door inspections, our assessors frequently come across previous fire door audit reports that nominate in the rectification works, the removal of a second locking device to a fire door. This is a significant item in terms of cost, in a large apartment complex.

You can have two locking devices installed on a fire door. The extra fire door locking device must be surface mounted and not be a deadlock (that is, locked on the inside by a key). An assessor must be aware of this during fire door inspections.

The extra lock installed on the fire door must be an approved lock for the type of fire door it is attached to, and tested to AS 4145.2-2008 ‘Locksets and hardware for doors and windows – Mechanical locksets for doors and windows in buildings’. The following example is an image of an approved fire door lock from Lockwood. The image is a Lockwood 001 Double Cylinder Deadlatch with lever.
