bca2011_vol1AUST – Essential Property Services advises the Building Code of Australia (BCA) in clause 3.6 Sliding fire doors requires fire walls incorporating sliding fire doors, that are held open during use must be provided with electromagnetic hold open devices, these must be implemented during fire door inspections. The electromagnetic device, audible warning device and flashing red light must be initiated upon the activation of either heat or smoke detectors or any other required fire alarm such as a sprinkler system located within either fire compartment.                                                                                                                                                                                                                               The following illustration from BCA Illustrated depicts as acceptable activation method for sliding fire doors.

The installation of sliding fire doors must comply with AS 1905.1-2005 Components for the protection of openings in fire-resistant walls – Fire Resistant doorsets and maintenance of fire door and fire door inspections in accordance with AS 1851-2005 ‘Maintenance of fire protection systems and equipment’ for fire door maintenance.
