Sprinkler Protection System

The Building Code of Australia in Part E1 Fire Fighting Equipment in clause E1.5 Sprinklers, nominates when a sprinkler protection system is to be installed in a building. A sprinkler protection system is designed to suppress a fire and alert the fire brigade automatically. All building surveyors/ certifiers will nominate a sprinkler protection system in the essential safety measures determination/ schedule.

Building Code of Australia

Clause E1.5 which nominates when a sprinkler protection system is to be installed refers to specification E1.5 Fire Sprinkler Systems. Specification E1.5 requires fire sprinkler protection systems to comply with AS 2118.1-2006 Automatic fire sprinkler system – General systems.

The following illustration depicts the sprinkler protection system requirements for a warehouse building containing combustible storage.

The following is a part extract of clause I1.1 for an Essential Safety Measure (as appeared in BCA 2013) known as sprinkler protection systems:

Essential Safety Measures Audit – Sprinkler Protection System

An essential safety measures auditor should check the sprinkler protection systems logbook required under AS 1851-2005 Maintenance of fire protection systems and equipment and report any deficiencies for inspections, testing and maintenance in the building’s essential safety measures logbook. Building owners and auditors must be aware that the sprinkler protection system may have been designed under NFDA 13Rsprinkler protection system, which requires a different maintenance system/ routine.
