AUST – Emergency Plan was commissioned by the business proprietor to prepare the necessary emergency plan and evacuation diagrams (evacuation signs) under AS 3745-2010 ‘Planning for emergencies in facilities’ for an existing nursing home.

The nursing home building had a number of superseded emergency procedures and evacuation diagrams that did not comply with the new provisions of AS 3745-2010. Minor alterations under a building approval had also occurred that required the evacuation diagrams or emergency procedures to be updated. AS 3745-2010 requires the Emergency Planning Committee to nominate a validation date for the evacuation diagrams (that is, the date upon which the evacuation diagrams must be re-assessed against potential changes that have occurred to the building or AS 3745-2010). The Emergency Planning Committee in this instance chose 12 months.

Owners and tenants should realise that any building works occurring in the building that offsets the information contained on the evacuation diagram, requires the evacuation diagram or evacuation sign to be upgraded and re-issued expeditiously.

Our client requested the evacuation diagrams to be provided in A3 size and in portrait presentation, the assembly areas are shown on these evacuation diagrams as they are located in common areas, an example of which follows:

(Note: Various symbols and indicators on evacuation signs under the BFSR and Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) vary to those nominated in AS 3745-2010 ‘Planning for emergencies in facilities’. If requested dual compliance with BFSR and AS 3745-2010, then BFSR symbols would take precedence and then followed by AS 3745-2010 for the symbols – indicators not included in the BFSR).
