AUST – Essential Property Services advises that the Building Code of Australia (BCA) in clause C3.5 ‘Doorways in fire walls’ states a single fire door or shutter must achieve an insulation level of at least 30 and a fire resistance level equivalent to BCA Specification C1.1. The aggregate width of openings (fire doors) that are not part of a horizontal exit must not exceed half of the length of the fire wall. AS 1905.1-2005 deals with the installation of fire doors and AS 1851-2005 deals with fire door inspections.

The following illustration from BCA Illustrated depicts an acceptable method of protecting doorways (fire doors) in fire walls.

This installation of a fire door must comply with AS 1905.1-2005 ‘Components for the protection of openings in fire – resistant walls – fire resistant door sets’ and fire door maintenance in accordance with AS 1851-2005 ‘Maintenance of fire protection systems and equipment’ which cover fire doors and fire door inspections.
