AUST – Hendry building surveyors have noticed that some architects, designers, developers and building certifiers are incorrectly interpreting travel distances for building egress to a single exit at street level to be increased to 30m in lieu of 20m.

In many cases the shop or office, which is often subject to a building approval for fit out works, is located within the main complex, therefore more than one exit is applicable and the 20m rule applies.

The following illustration of BCA clause D1.4 (c) (ii) from BCA Illustrated depicts the increase in travel distances allowed.
