VIC – Emergency Plan advises it is a requirement by the Victorian Registration Qualification and Authority (VRQA) that all Secondary Schools in Victoria comply with relevant State and Commonwealth legislation. Industry best practice, to ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 and Regulations 2007, to provide and maintain a safe working environment, is to follow requirements in accordance with the Australian Standard AS 3745-2010 ‘Planning for emergencies in facilities’.

Review bodies for secondary schools in Victoria, issue guidelines to ensure respective schools produce an emergency plan that meets minimum standards. Guidelines issued by review bodies expect an emergency plan to include a copy of the schools current ‘site map’ or ‘evacuation diagram‘, which is a pictorial representation of a floor or area including information on; the location of evacuation assembly areas, emergency related equipment such as fire extinguishers and hose reels, you are here locations and a brief outline of emergency procedures. AS 3745 -2010 requires, to ensure a safe work environment, to display sufficient emergency and evacuation information, such information is expected to be provided in various forms including, the display of evacuation diagrams which are designed to aid a safe, and rapid evacuation of persons from a building.
