VIC – Emergency Plan advises that employers know they have a responsibility to provide a safe work place for their employees including during emergencies. This is a requirement under state based Occupational Health & Safety Legislation. Building owners also have a duty of care to make sure that occupants and visitors are safe in the building, including during emergencies. The extent and detail of the emergency procedures required to be in place are not detailed by a specific piece of legislation, so employers and building owners must rely on independent standards to guide the detail.
